It is a sort of abstract reinterpretation of a lampshade, an archetype of the traditional lighting object that Magistretti reinterprets by combining a perfect formal composition with harmonious proportions. As in many of the lighting objects designed by Vico Magistretti, the Atollo table lamp is based on the simplicity of absolute geometry and is emblematic of the simplicity of thought and design typical of this designer who constantly seeks to combine simple formal solutions with lighting effects. This table lamp with adjustable intensity direct and diffused light is composed of a cylindrical base that tapers into a cone to support a hemispherical shade (like in Sonora) that looks suspended. The use of painted aluminium keeps the external part of the shade in the shadow while, inside, the light spreads over the cone-shaped element and simultaneously onto the cylindrical base. The geometrical simplicity and rigour of the composition is enhanced by the treatment of the technical elements, which remain concealed, as is customary in Vico Magistretti's research, starting from the Mania lamp, one of the designer's first projects in 1963. Atollo won the Compasso d'oro ADI in 1979, and is still in production today in its range of dimensions, and in methacrylate and glass, which also produces diffused light and whose production started in 1988.
